First aid translated for first responders
App design

AT&T Hackathon in partnership with Department of Homeland Security (DHS)

The 1st Minute Mobile App provides language translation during medical emergencies. The easy-to-use interface allows first responders to receive critical triage information from foreign language speaking patients within 60 seconds.

problem statement

Effective communication between an emergency responder (EMT) and a newly-injured patient is a matter of life and death. If they don't speak the same language, treatment becomes more of a guessing game. Without proper translation, the EMT could misread and mis-diagnose a patient's existing condition. The Department of Homeland Security partnered with AT&T to put on a hackathon that addressed the needs of first responders – an underutilized market for the mobile app revolution of the last few years.

solution

1st minute's mobilehealth app solves this problem by allowing patients to easily communicate theirsituation in their own language and choose symptoms on a body map display. Thesituation summary is then compiled and translated back to the EMT's native language.A screen link to Google Translate is available if needed. The app runs on anydevice and informs the best decision for the next level of medical care - all in under 30 seconds.

my role

As the sole UX/UI architect on the team my role was to create the entire architecture of the flow and how the users will interact with it. This led us to some interesting research about the non-native english speakers and their journey in US a primarily english speaking country. Following research I made a list of the top features that the app should try to solve for. I designed the logo, the flow, the wires and the final screens that helped mould it into an app for first responders.

The sixty second flow

The challenge to create a flow that provides answers to the FIrst Responders in sixty seconds or less. Brainstormed ideas on how to best assess the patients needs with minimum discomfort and get answers to the most critical questions that would help the first responder to save their lives.

The 24-hour mvp android app

The MVP 24- hour AT&T hackathon challenge that won the best app and eventually led to the formation of the startup. The entire flow has been set up to provide the First Responders answers in 60 seconds or less
